Dear
Members,
CHAMPIONS OPEN 2012 GOLF SEASON
Our 2011 Club Champions Marion Gathercole and David Cullen were
the guests of honour
last Saturday in opening the 2012 golf season. They duly drove a
ceremonial golf ball “miles” down the first fairway to commence what is
surely to be a happy golfing year where we can look forward to a huge
reduction in our handicaps.
A
field of 69 including 10 women contested the Opening Day Ambrose
competition, which was won by the regular group of cavalier golfers Jon
Cook, Gerry Hopfmeuller,
Don Dixon and Bruce Groenwald.
Congratulations!
That
evening a group of 38 members and friends enjoyed the traditional
Captains’ Dinner hosted by John Robertson and Margot Parkes.
All
in all, a bright start to the season.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The
Club’s 81st AGM was held on 29 February attended by 44 members. As
reported at the meeting, the year was one of consolidation, reflected
in the club’s finances showing a profit of $82,512 before depreciation.
This profit result did not include the capital contribution (levy)
funds set aside for clubhouse renovations.
Very
evident is the club’s strong dependency on membership revenue. When
comparing membership numbers for 2010 and 2011, there has been a
reduction of 10%. This is of concern and the Board will be addressing
this at its first Board meeting.
At
the meeting I urged those present to seriously search for the
recruiting of one new member each. I now urge the full membership of
the club to do the same. By the introduction of just one new member you
would contribute to the health and well being of our club. Not all of
us can contribute time to sit on committees, attend functions and play
regular golf, HOWEVER
each of us could contribute handsomely to the club’s future by bringing
along one of your colleagues, friends or family to become a new member
of SVGC. Please seriously consider this as your important contribution
for 2012.
I
welcome the following new members to the Board:
|
Vice President:
Darren Welsh

Darren will take over
from Max Clarke as Chair the Course Committee |
Women’s
Captain:
Margot
Parkes

Margot takes on the
role of Women’s captain from Mary Ruth Squire |
Board
Member:
Ib Cameron

Ib will take over
from Laurie Fuhrmann as Chair of House Committee |
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank retiring
members Max Clarke, Mary Ruth Squire and Laurie
Fuhrmann for
their efforts whilst serving on the Board.
WANTED : A
JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR
Are
you interested in the development of juniors at the
club? Can you contribute a few hours per week during the “juniors’
season”, to
develop and co-ordinate a junior development program?
Every
assistance will be provided to help you in the
task.
We
urgently need a club member who perhaps has a
son/daughter/friend who is keen on golf or who just an interest in
juniors and
can implement a program which is available.
If
this is you, we would love to have a chat and
explain what is needed. Give the office a call or talk with myself or
John
Robertson. That’s all it takes for the start of a rewarding
contribution to one
area of club activity which is important to our future. Please
consider.
CLUBHOUSE
RENOVATIONS
In
August 2011 members approved a levy for the improvement
of the clubhouse and surrounds. That levy is known as a capital
contribution
and the fund now stands at $114,295.
The
Board has researched a number of options and has
now approved expenditure for evaporative air conditioning to be
installed in the
clubhouse. Contracts
have been awarded
and installation is anticipated to be undertaken during the week
commencing
Monday 19th March.
The
Board will continue to research further clubhouse
improvement items and a decision on the next stage will be advised to
members
as soon as possible.
COURSE NEWS
Our
Course Supervisor Owen Oberg is still absent from
work as a result of ongoing illness. The latest prognosis is that he is
expected to resume his duties at the end of March.
In
the interim the course is being managed by Ben
Gerovich, John Robertson and Stuart Clegg who, with the help of a
number of
dedicated volunteers, and Ben’s brother Tony, are managing to maintain
the
course.
Volunteers are asked to continue
with assisting until
Owen’s return. If there is anyone else who can assist that would be
appreciated. If you have any concerns related to the course please feel
free to
discuss with John Robertson or contact the office who will pass on your
concern/comments to John. Once again many thanks to all those who have
helped
out so far
